Inclusive Theatre & Access to Culture

Théâtre Le Monnot implemented a unique inclusive theatre experience aimed at making the performing arts fully accessible to persons with visual impairment. Through this initiative, EQUAL Lebanon extended a special invitation to persons with visual impairment, transforming a traditional cultural event into an inclusive space where accessibility, dignity, and meaningful participation were central.

Adapted accessibility measures were put in place to ensure that audience members with visual impairment could fully engage with the performance. These included professional audio description, enabling participants to follow key visual elements such as actors’ movements, facial expressions, costumes, and stage settings, and to fully experience the atmosphere and emotional depth of the play.

Supported by Mrs. Josianne Boulos, this initiative went beyond artistic access to serve as a powerful awareness-raising moment. It encouraged cultural institutions to rethink accessibility and adopt more inclusive practices, standing as a strong example of how collaboration between cultural institutions and civil society can promote equal access to culture for all.
